Pepperl + Fuchs VIATOR HART Modems

Viator® HART Modems are now Integrated into Pepperl+Fuchs HART Interface Solutions

What is the HART protocol?

The HART (Highway Addressable Remote Transducer) communication protocol is a hybrid analog+digital industrial automation open protocol. Its most notable advantage is that it can communicate over legacy 4–20 mA analog instrumentation current loops, sharing the pair of wires used by the analog-only host systems. HART is widely used in process and instrumentation systems ranging from small automation applications up to highly sophisticated industrial applications.  Due to the huge installation base of 4–20 mA systems throughout the world, the HART Protocol is one of the most popular industrial protocols today. HART protocol has made a good transition protocol for users who wish to use the legacy 4–20 mA signals, but wanted to implement a "smart" protocol.

What is a HART modem?

A HART modem creates an interface to exchange data between a HART network and your PC or handheld.

The term “modem” is short for Modulator and Demodulator, which is what a modem does. Modulation superimposes a digital wave onto an analog radio frequency (RF) wave.  Demodulation works in reverse—it separates the RF carrier wave from the digital data.  Modulation is the process of encoding information in a transmitted signal, while demodulation is the process of extracting information from the transmitted signal.

Viator® HART Modems have officially become a Pepperl+Fuchs branded product since August of 2015.  Formerly owned by MACTek, Inc., a leading provider of HART protocol devices. The BULLET, also a MACTek product, was previously integrated into the WirelessHART product portfolio.

Viator HART modems, formerly marketed under Pepperl+Fuchs MACTek Inc, are now being sold, shipped, and supported internationally by Control-Automation.  Bluetooth, RS-232, USB, and USB with PowerXpress™ Viator models are available, including an Intrinsically Safe Bluetooth version that is designed specifically for use in hazardous locations [HM-MT-BT-EX-010041].

A natural fit into HART product lineup, Jim Bolin of Pepperl+Fuchs’ had this to say about the Viator integration, “We are so pleased to officially add Viator HART modems to our existing HART portfolio," said Mr. Bolin, Pepperl+Fuchs' executive vice president of the Americas. "This integration complements our current product line and allows us to provide an even greater breadth of services to our customers, in the United States and now, globally."

HART Interface Solutions enable the transfer of additional process values and device status information from the field to the control room via the standard 4…20 mA loop. By applying this cost-effective technology, users gain more insight into their plant processes without the need to integrate additional transmitters and wiring. Viator provides HART Communication Foundation registered interfaces for affordable, reliable, and secure wireless communication between a PC host system and any HART field device.
